Skin Cancer

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

There are three common types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

Of the three, melanoma is the most fearsome because if left untreated it will inevitably spread internally.

Family history of skin cancer, skin color and the amount of sun exposure over a lifetime are important predisposing factors to all skin cancer.

Patients on immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus are also at greater risk of skin cancer and should be examined frequently.

Outside of reducing sun exposure, the best weapon against skin cancer is early detection.

The American Academy of Dermatology and the Skin Cancer Foundation have excellent educational materials at their websites.
